Environment committee votes for viable ETS as industry fails to dictate terms

The EP Environment Committee has seen off attempts by industry to completely derail the Emissions Trading Scheme. The committee voted for a full auctioning of carbon credits under the scheme by 2020, with all auction revenues to be used for climate-related purposes.

EU15 makes some progress towards Kyoto emissions targets

The EU15 (the 15 'old' EU member states) is making progress towards its greenhouse gas emissions reduction commitment under the Kyoto Protocol. However, a new report from the European Environment Agency shows significant use of external offsets will be necessary to ultimately meet the overall target.

MEPs have voted to introduce meaningful rules for tackling the damaging climate impact of cars: average emissions should be reduced to 130 g/km by 2012 through vehicle improvements with an extra 10 g/km reduction through additional measures.

UN-Conference ends without solution to protect biodiversity from agrofuels threat.

The EU did neither show a common approach nor a united position at the negotiations during the high-level meeting in Bonn. Now it will be up to the Parliament and the Council to deal with the topic. Those fights among EU states are not a good sign in the perspective of the UN climate change summit in Poznan.
